What does it mean for two events to be independent?

A pair of events are independent if the probability of one event occurring has no effect on the occurrence of the other event. Mathematically, independence is achieved if for two events A and B, P(A | B) = P(A), meaning the fact that event B has occurred (the conditional probability of A given B occurred) is the same as the overall probability of A occurring.
